Taiwan craftsman seeks to save printing heritage

Hunched over a metal casting machine, Chang Chieh-kuan carefully guides a tiny copper mold into a hydraulic press. Seconds later he extracts a piece of lead type with the Chinese character for "happiness."


That's one down, thousands more to go in a last-ditch effort by this 58-year-old craftsman to rescue the millennium-old world of Chinese lead type from the advance of the digital age.

I Introduction

Bonjour et bienvenue sur la page du projet de réhabilitation de l’imprimerie typographique chinoise en caractères traditionnels mené autour de la fonderie Ri Xing, à Taipei !

Si vous lisez ces lignes, c’est certainement que vous avez un intérêt particulier pour l’imprimerie à caractères mobiles, la typographie et sans doute aussi pour les caractères chinois, mais que votre connaissance de la langue chinoise ne vous permet peut-être pas encore de lire la plupart des documents disponibles sur ce site.

Le présent texte vise à présenter brièvement le groupement d’individus que nous sommes (et qui fonctionne, pour l’instant encore, de façon très informelle), la façon dont il s’est constitué, le projet autour duquel il s’est retrouvé et le travail qu’il mène déjà.
Nous recommandons aux lecteurs parmi vous qui ne seraient pas familiers avec le sujet de commencer par lire nos quelques Rappels concernant l’écriture chinoise présentés en annexe.

I Introduction

Hello and welcome to our webpage, which was set up to promote the project of rehabilitation of Chinese typographic letterpress, led by the Ri Xing typefoundry in Taipei!

If you are reading this, then you are probably already interested in movable type printing, typography, and perhaps Chinese characters as well. However, your knowledge of the Chinese language may not be sufficient to read many of the documents found on this website.

The purpose of this text is therefore to briefly introduce the project and the group of people behind it (who are, as yet, collaborating on a rather informal basis), as well as the work we’ve already started to carry out. We recommend that those readers unfamiliar with this topic start off by reading our Reminders concerning the Chinese script, presented below in the form of an appendix.
